Gossypium spp. or ornamental cotton is a fasinating plant to watch grow. This 30 inch plant is actually a perennial shrub that in cultivation is used as an annual. This plant has beautiful flowers that open white and turn dark pink before falling. The seed pods are fun to watch open also. I use mine as a flowering shrub in my zone 8b. Hardy in zones 8-11. -Feel free to browse my flower photo gallery online.

Black Current Swirl datura plants. I do grow quite a few varieties of these plants and this one was very unusual. These flowers are usually double and sometimes triple but most of the blossoms on this plant were quadruple. The stems on this plant are dark purple and the leaves are backed in purple. This is an annual that reseeds freely in warmer climates. All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested. Feel free to visit my flower garden gallery.

Viola x williamsii Tiger Eyes, also know as Johnny Jump Up, has attractive gold petals that are inlaid with intricate black veins contrasting with the dark green foliage. These plants grew next to my front steps in a ceramic pot and were the center of attention all winter and through the early spring. Seeds can be started in late fall for the next late winter or early spring. This annual will grow 9 inches in full to partial sun.

Malva Zebrina. Although I rarely grow annuals, this is the exception. Growing 16 to 18 inches tall, this is one of the toughest annuals for my hot humid summers. The hundreds of 2 inch lavender and purple striped blossoms never seem to go out of bloom throughout the entire summer.

beautiful Tacca Integrifolia or White Bat Flower. This is one of the most interesting plants that I grow, very intriguing. This tropical in only hardy in zones 9-11, but can be brought inside during cold months and kept in a sunny window. This plant has large crinkled leaves 14 long and 8 inches across. They do not like to be grown in even part sun, keep in filtered shade. The 3 inch white ears and 12 whiskers are what make this plant so interesting. Seeds are very slow to germinate, sometimes taking up to 9 months, you have to be patient with this one.
