Native African banana Ensete ventricosum is one of the fastest growing of all the bananas. Known to normally grow up to 6 feet in one year. Not producing edible fruit but shows off their beautiful unfurling leaves with both red and sometimes white edges. The dark maroon midrib is very attractive. This is best grown in large pots as it does not tolerate heavy frosts. Hardy in zones 9-11.
Pink Velveteen Banana
-$18.00-
This beautiful and very easy to grow tropical Musa Velvutina or Pink Velvet Banana is hardy in zones 7-11. It can be planted outside with lots of mulch and frost protection where it needs to be fertilized with slow release fertilizer and kept in full sun. This fast grower doesn't reach grow much taller that 5 feet. I have had mine for five years and none have grown more than five feet. It has beautiful pest free foliage and a burgundy midrib running down the leaf. The flowers are hot pink and the bananas that follow are a beautiful bright pink also. When the inedible fruit totally opens it appears to be a large group of lilies when the banana peels fold back, its quite a sight. This is also a very good house plant in containers and one of the few bananas that will blossom inside.
Musa Helen's Hybrid

Musa Helen's Hybrid. From eastern Himalaya a hybrid between Musa sikkimensis, a frost hardy banana and Musa Chini-Champa, a cool hardy edible variety. This combination should survive in a relatively cool winter. The plant produces an edible fruit, although these are full of seeds, it should prove to be an excellent candidate for growing a fruiting banana.
