The dark green leaves are about 6 in across and dissected into 5 narrow lobes. The stems, branches, leaf veins, and petioles (leaf stems) are reddish purple. The hibiscus-like flowers, appearing in October, are red and 3 in across. At the bottom of each flower, enclosing the bases of the five petals, is a fleshy bright red cup-like structure. The calyces of roselle are used to make juices, sauces, jellies, wines and pies

This 4'-6' shurb produces these beautiful sprays of hot pink blossoms that cover the shrub for most of the summer The foliage is the real star on this plant, cream, white, pink and green are a hard combination to beat. This plant is in blossom from mid summer through last fall in my zone 8B, and is hardy to zone 11. Very easy to grow and is very heat tolerant but does not like its roots to dry out completely. When you keep the spent blossoms picked off, it will give you another flush of blossoms in the fall as well as spring.
